Principal's note
Lane Cove West Public School is situated on almost two hectares of parkland in the northern suburbs of Sydney, close to the Lane Cove River. The school opened in 1951 and has just undergone a major building program providing six new classrooms, toilet and laundry facilities, a kiln room and a large new Administration building. Upgrading of cricket nets, playground and garden facilities has also taken place. Further building was completed last year and the school now has a large school hall, canteen and huge COLA (covered outdoor learning area). This complex is an excellent facility for teaching and learning, performance, sport and community events.
Lane Cove West provides a stimulating learning environment for all students from kindergarten to Year 6. Our parents have high expectations and aspirations for their children and these are realised through the skill and dedication of our highly qualified teaching staff and are reflected in the quality learning outcomes achieved by our students.
The students at Lane Cove West Public School achieve excellence in State and National testing in literacy and numeracy and also in the University of NSW competitions in English, Mathematics, Writing, Spelling, Computers and Science. The very full school curriculum provides programs that cater for a wide range of student abilities, from the gifted and talented, to those requiring support and remediation.
Interactive whiteboards have been installed in all classrooms and all students have access to computers both in the classrooms and also in the Computer lab, which is situated in the school library, which is the central hub of information technoloy in the school.
The performing arts plays a very important role in the education of our students with opportunities to participate in dance, drama, school bands and choirs. Sport also plays an important role, with students given the opportunity to participate in PSSA inter-school sport and also in clinics in athletics, cricket, netball and gymnastics.
Our students are environmentally aware and we are very proud of our three raised vegetable gardens, water tanks, worm farms and compost bins. We have a garden club which meets weekly to tend the gardens. We have fitted solar panels to the hall roof to generate power and all school toilets are flushed with rainwater from our water tanks.
The school encourages the development of leadership skills and supports an active Student Representative Council (SRC). Great importance is placed on the values of respect, responsibility, courtesy, self discipline and pride in self and school.
Our tight-knit community school values a high level of support from a very active parent body which works in partnership with staff to provide programs and resources of the highest quality for our students. Our parents have recently funded complete re-turfing of the school oval, including an irrigation system which operates using rainwater. They have also funded a support teacher for students who experience difficulty with their learning and have funded covered walkways to connect all classrooms and keep our students dry during wet weather.
Our student welfare program emphasises the need to be respectful, be responsible and be safe. We know that our children are students today, but will be the leaders of the future.
Learners today, Leaders tomorrow.
I look forward to a happy, supportive and productive relationship with you and your children.
Regards
Judy Doherty
