Special Programs
Lane Cove West Public School has many Special Programs for students. Please consult the Handbook PDF for a comprehensive overview.
School Band
Our Band program is a fantastic success with both the Senior and Junior Bands
achieving Silver Awards at this years Yamaha Festival. This is a special thrill for
the Junior Band who have only been playing their instruments and reading music for
two terms.
Thanks must go to Mr Brad Madigan, the Junior Band Conductor and to Gavin Staines the
Senior Band Conductor.
A special thankyou to all our supportive families.
The Band program at Lane Cove West is expanding rapidly and looks to recruit new members
from years 3 to 6 each year. A parent run Band Committee ensures the band
program is run efficiently and effectively in liaison with the
professional Senior Band Director, Gavin Staines. The bands have a variety of performance
venues during the year, including performances at school
assemblies, Fireworks Night, Carols in the School, concerts and
Eisteddfods.
For any enquiries please contact our coordinator Katrina Nash on 9428 4965.
Further information about the School Band can found on the P&C website.
Sport
Sport and Physical Education plays an important part of the PD/H/PE Syllabus. Children at Lane Cove West are taking part in the Premier's Sporting Challenge.
Stage 2 and 3 students participate in PSSA (Public School Sporting Association). This is an Inter school sport program where the children compete against other schools in the region. Teams participate in, AFL, soccer and netball.
Annual carnivals are held for swimming, cross-country and athletics (8 years and older). K-2 students have their own separate carnival where the focus is on having a go. Every child and teacher belongs to one of the three sports houses which are named after local historical figures. Children in the same family are placed in the same house -
Blackman - Green
Charlish - Yellow
Penrose - Red
Throughout the year the students participate in specialised sporting programs including gymnastics, skipping, Sports In Schools, swimming and dance.
The students attend weekly P.E lessons. During Sport in Term 3 children will be concentrating on preparing for the sports carnival including running starts and finishes, relays and field events and the skills that are required. This Term students will also be taught Volley Ball and Newcombe Ball skills using various games to assist learning how to play the game.
Library
Our library is the focal point of the school and plays an important
role. It holds items including books, audiovisual items and excellent
reference section. The library provides material to satisfy educational
needs and recreational interests.
All students from Kindergarten to
Year 6 have access to the library for borrowing, research and to view
audiovisual programs. Children borrow directly from the library and a
large selection of books is also distributed by the library to the
classroom, to provide additional reading materials and to supplement
classroom themes.
The library is computerised and borrowing is done with a computer card
and scanner. Students are trained as library monitors to assist the
Teacher Librarian. The Library is open at lunch times for quiet reading and
research.
Parent help is always welcome to assist with shelving, tidying and
covering of books. Please contact the school office if you can help.
Creative arts
Our school is committed to the performing arts. Each year we have students participating in the Sydney North Dance Festival, both in the junior and senior division. The students learn dances choreographed by our specialised creative arts teacher Lindsay Lamb along with teachers Sharmin Adaggra and Tracey Seiver. The students rehearse their dances during lunchtimes and perform at both matinee and evening performances at Glen Street Theatre at Belrose.
Our school is also proud of our musical productions. In 2008 the students performed Annie Jnr. This year the production is entitled ‘The Enchanted Forest’, and has been written by our own Assistant Principal Bronwyn Neal. The students dedicate their time to rehearse and perform to the local community including, parents, family members, school members and the local preschools and nursing homes.
Students may participate in the K-2 toothless choir, Year 3/4 choir and Year 5/6 choir. These choirs are trained by experienced choir teachers and perform at the Sydney Opera House, Proms Concert at the Sydney Town Hall, school assemblies and at special events.
Our students also create class artworks each year for the P&C to auction at their annual trivia night.
Technology
Our school is committed to providing up to date technologies to all students. We currently have 9 classrooms equipped with Interactive White Boards (IWBs), and are awaiting the arrival of an additional 9 IWBs so that each classroom will have one.
Teachers take part in training and development throughout the year to further support their teaching practices.
Using IWBs can facilitate learning by providing access to the internet, multimedia programs, games and lessons that are ‘interactive’. This form of teaching engages the students and supports all styles of learning.
In addition to IWBs the school is equipped with an Interactive Classroom with video conferencing facilities. These facilities can take students on live virtual excursions to places that would otherwise be inaccessible (NASA, The Great Barrier Reef) or they can allow classes to conference live with other schools (to share news, explore current topics, look at lifestyle differences or have a live debate).
The school also has a computer lab with computers, internet access, printers, webcams, headphones and microphones to allow students to use the equipment to engage in a range of digital media activities.
Each classroom has their own computers and all students and staff have access to digital cameras, audiovisual equipment and video cameras.
Chess club
The P&C operates a Chess Club which meets in Terms 2 and 3 every Wednesday afternoon for one hour. This club is open to children from Year 1 to Year 6 and is supervised by volunteer teachers and parents.
Community involvement
Our school is currently involved in many community projects. One major contribution this year is with the LEAP committee, a group of parents who comprise the Lane Cove West Earth Action Project (LEAP). Our school is helping by planting trees within our school environment, along with monitoring the waste involved in the packaging of student lunches. This is educating the students on better ways to package their lunches, how to recycle and ways to look after our environment.
