Year 1

Your child begins Year 1 with familiar faces and school routines.

Year 1 is the start of Learning Stage 1 and will continue until the end of Year 2. This year students become more involved in school routines and continue to develop their social skills as they interact with other children in the classroom and playground.

What's happening in Year 1?

In Year 1 at Lane Cove West we are committed to providing quality literacy and numeracy programs which set our students up for a lifetime of academic achievement.  There are four Year 1 classes in 2017.

1W - Miss Susan Watt (Relieving Assistant Principal)

1D -  Miss Sarah Dixon

1J - Mrs Samantha Jangoshian (M-W) and Miss Courtney Bennetts (Th-F)

K/1C - Mrs Alix Campbell

Three times per week students engage in quality literacy group activities which cater for different levels of academic development. Parents are invited to read one-on-one with the students during these sessions.  All students are involved in levelled home reading programs through which our parents play a special role in the literacy development of their children.

Students practise writing every day through explicit, modelled, guided and independent activities. Throughout the year students will engage in writing informative, imaginative and persuasive texts.  Their writing reflects famiiar events and topics.  Year 1 students are also using the 'Sentence A Day' program, where they focus on writing detailed sentences accurately.

Lane Cove West PS is continuing to use the 'Ants in the Apple' spelling program, in which the weekly spelling list provides the focus on which other literacy activities, including phonemic awareness, grammar, vocabulary and handwriting are based. Students requiring additional learning assistance are catered for through teacher and parent-led literacy support programs.

All Year 1 students participate in daily numeracy sessions.  Mathematics is studied using hands-on activities, the interactive whiteboard and written tasks, with a focus on basic addition and subtraction skills.  Topics students study in Year 1 include number facts, addition and subtraction, patterns, money, measurement, chance and time.

Topic Areas

Year 1 will begin learning Mandarin this year.  Our specialist Mandarin teacher, Miss Amanda Hung, presents engaging lessons incorporating hands-on tasks and technology.

During Semester 1, students will compare the past and present in the History topic 'Back in Time'.  This will include experiencing a day in the past at North Ryde Public School' Schoolhouse Museum.

This year in Science students will study the units 'Watch it Grow, 'Water Works'' and 'All Mixed Up'.
