Year 2

In Year 2, children are in the final year of learning in Stage 1. They begin the year with familiar faces and school routines.

Students continue developing from the foundations built in Year 1.  They become more independent in following school routines and continue to develop their social skills as they interact with other children in the classroom and playground.

Your child is in the final year of Learning Stage 1.

Students in Year 2 build on their basic reading, writing and maths skills through a variety of activities.

What's happening in Year 2?

In Year 2 at Lane Cove West we are committed to providing quality literacy and numeracy programs which set our students up for a lifetime of academic achievement.  The Year 2 classes in 2017 are:

2C - Ms Judy Cowell

2N - Mr Lachlan Nicol

2K - Miss Sarah Kennedy

2Q - Miss Steph Farmer (Mon-Tues) & Mrs Michelle Quick (Wed-Fri)

Miss Susan Watt is the relieving Assistant Principal for Stage 1.

Three times per week students engage in quality literacy group activities which cater for different levels of academic development. Parents are invited to read one-on-one with the students during these sessions. All students are involved in levelled home reading programs, through which our parents play a special role in the literacy development of their children.

Students practise writing every day through explicit modelled, guided and independent activities. Throughout the year, students will engage in writing informative, imaginative and persuasive texts. Their writing reflects familiar events and topics.  Year 2 students are also using the 'Sentence A Day' program, where they focus on writing detailed sentences accurately.

Lane Cove West is continuing to use the 'Ants in the Apple' spelling program, in which the weekly spelling list provides the focus on which other literacy activities, including phonemic awareness, grammar, vocabulary and handwriting, are based.  Students requiring additional learning assistance are catered for through teacher and parent-led literacy support programs.

All Year 2 students participate in daily numeracy sessions.  Mathematics is studied using concrete materials, the interactive whiteboard and written tasks, with a focus on basic addition and subtraction skills.  Topics students study in Year 2 include basic number facts, addition and subtraction, patterns, money, measurement, chance and time.

Students in Year 2 at Lane Cove West are also introduced to problem solving strategies in line with the working mathematically area of the Mathematics Syllabus.  We aim to develop strong problem solving skills and provide students with opportunities to practically apply their content knowledge in given situations, as well as develop higher order thinking skills.
