Year 3

Your child has taken the significant step from infants to primary school and into the first year of Learning Stage 2.

National test

This is the first year your child sits for the National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) test held in May. There are four tests covering numeracy, reading, writing, spelling, punctuation and grammar.

You will receive a report of your child's achievement in the tests. The results tell you how your child is progressing in these areas and can guide the learning support you give your child at home.

What's happening in Year 3?

The dynamic 2017 Year 3 teachers are:

  • 3S - Mrs Samantha Silipo (Mon-Thurs) and Mrs Teneale Dean (Fri)
  • 3L - Mr Shannon Loker 
  • 3W - Miss Lyn Wynne

Students will attend maths groups each day. The mathematics program follows a whole school scope and sequence. Maths teachers will also set Mathletics and maths mentals homework activities as required.

In English, students participate in Speaking and Listening activities that help the development of their public speaking skills. on occasion, students will also present a formal 2-3 minute speech as part of Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition. Students will be given the opportunity to read individually, in small groups and as a class. Students will be regularly assessed and monitored to ensure they are reading and comprehending at the correct level and are given opportunities to excel. Writing will cover a specific text focus each term that is linked to other subject areas.

Excursions and incursions will be based our History, Geography and Science and Technology topics - this year they will be;

 History: Celebrations and Commemorations

Geography: The Great Barrier Reef

Science & Technology - Magnetic Moves, Feathers, Fur or Leaves, Night and Day and Material World.

Lindsay Lamb will continue with the Creative Arts program and Coach Abby Brown will take the children for PE once a week. The students will also be given the opportunity to attend the Sports in Schools programs. The Life Education program will also be operating which empowers children to make informed choices for a safe and healthy life.

Library days will vary from class to class so check with your child.
