Year 6 is the final year of primary school and an exciting time as students can take a leadership role in our school. We work together with high schools to assist our Year 6 students to have a successful start to high school.
There are great opportunities for students to participate in extra-curricular activities. These include competitions, exhibitions, sport, performances and special events. Student leadership programs provide many activities that broaden your child's experience at school.
Selective high school test
This year applicants can sit for the selective high school placement test if they are interested in applying for entry to a selective high school. The test has reading, writing, mathematics and general ability components.

What's happening in Year 6?
The Year 6 teachers for 2017 are:
6T - Mr Callum Thomson (Assistant Principal Stage 3)
6J - Mr James Josling
6L - Mrs Zoe Lee
Year 6 had a very busy start to 2017, beginning with the election of leaders, formation of our committees and members learning their weekly roles and responsibilities. Students have also spent time helping their Kindergarten buddies and worked on their art projects. They enjoyed being involved in the gymnastics program and public speaking activities. They are looking forward to their trip to the Great Aussie Bush Camp at the end of term 1.
Our literacy program caters for the needs and interests of all students. Using the NSW English Syllabus for the Australian Curriculum, students are engaged in Reading, Writing and Speaking and Listening activities which promote a love of both language and literature.
Students with additional learning support needs are catered for by the classroom teacher and learning support team.
This year we continue with the 'Ants in the Apple' spelling program which was implemented from Year 1-6 in 2013. The detailed program provides the focus on which other literacy activities, including phonemic awareness, grammar, vocabulary and handwriting are based.
All Year 6 students participate in daily maths groups of one hour. The content covered is in line with the NSW Mathematics Syllabus for the Australian Curriculum.
Year 6 teachers recognise the value of problem solving skills in creating learners of the future. Every week, Year 6 undertakes lessons which cover key problem-solving strategies. We aim to develop strong problem-solving skills and provide students with opportunities to practically apply their knowledge in given situations, as well as develop higher order thinking skills.
Students are also able to participate in the Maths Olympiad program.
In HSIE this year Year 6 will be:
History: Australian Colonies
Geography: Factors that Shape Places

In PDHPE, Year 6 will participate in lessons in Positive Behaviour and Engaging Learner lessons, lessons in nutrition and Child Protection.
Students also participate in weekly rotational fitness activities as well as having a PE lesson once a week with a specialist PE teacher, Mrs Brown (Coach Brown). Throughout the year, students will participate in Sports in Schools, Class Sport and the PSSA program.
Creative and Performing Arts
All Year 6 students participate in regular visual arts, dance, drama and music lessons.
Year 6 will participate in the highly regarded annual school production. In addition to some students having lead roles, each class will present a class item. These will be co-ordinated with the support of our specialist Creative Arts Teacher, Mrs Gee.
